Alex Ovechkin wasn't going to go quietly into the good night after his Washington Capitals were blown out, 5-0, in Game 7 versus the New York Rangers Monday night.
It certainly was a series to forget for Ovechkin. After compiling 56 points (32 goals, 24 assists) during the regular season, he managed two points in the first two games against the Rangers, then was shut out for the rest of the series. And to cap it all off, he was shut out at the Verizon Center to end the season.
The Capitals entered the playoffs with the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, but they had just one more win than the sixth-seeded Rangers. The Rangers scored four or more goals in three of their wins against Washington, while the Capitals were blanked in the final two games of the series.
This was, by far, Ovechkin's worst career offensive performance in the postseason. He racked up 59 points in 51 career playoff games coming into the series. It's understandable why the star would vent after things simply didn't go his (or the Capitals') way. It was a frustrating way to end a season.
