Tampa Bay Championship Past Winners and History

The event was founded in 2000 as an alternate event to the President's Cup. In 2001, it was supposed to be the alternate event to the WGC-American Express Championship, but was cancelled because of the terrorist attacks on September 11. It served as the alternate event in 2002.

Chrysler became the sponsor in 2003, and the event had its own slot as the last full-field event before the Tour Championship. Renamed the Chrysler Championship, the tournament held that spot until 2006.

In 2007, the tournament found a new slot in the schedule, and a new sponsor: PODS. Originally, PODS had a six year sponsorship agreement, but backed out on an option after 2008. Transitions Optical, another Florida corporation, became the sponsor in 2009.

It served while the alternate event in 2002. Chrysler became the sponsor in 2003, and the event had a unique slot since the last full-field event before the Tour Championship. Renamed the Chrysler Championship, the contest held that position until 2006. In 2007, the contest found a new position in the schedule, and a new sponsor: PODS. Formerly, PODS had a six year support settlement, but backed on a choice after 2008. Transitions Optical, still another Florida corporation, became the mentor last year. The tournament was left by transitions in 2012, but a couple of weeks ahead of the 2013 event, Everbank took up the reigns. The participants most abundant in wins in the case are Retief Goosen (2003 and 2009), and K.J. Choi (2002 and 2006). Retief Goosen can be the tournamentas top income winner, with over $2,000,000 in earnings at the big event. The match report was established by Vijay Singh in 2004 with a winning total of 266.

Nike launches Summer 2013 CR7 Collection

Pace is one of the hallmarks of Cristiano Ronaldo's game. Pace also defines the bold, distinctive spirit of the new CR7 Collection – launched by Nike.

The inspiration for the designs of the Summer 2013 CR7 Collection come from Cristiano's love for all things fast. The collection includes the new colorway of the CR Mercurial IX boot, performance training items and a variety of polo and T-shirts.

The CR Mercurial IX boot has been reworked with this season's version. It is a fusion of white, neon orange, neon yellow and orange safari print. The safari print is inspired by the Mercurial Vapor Superfly II.

Beyond its striking design, the boot features an engineered upper that enhances support and touch allowing Ronaldo to perform at high levels of speed and skill.

A leather like finish on the upper – preferred by the athlete, and Nike's innovative All Conditions Control (ACC) technology further aids his performance; the special treatment now used on all Nike boots ensures a consistent touch whether playing in wet or dry conditions weather.

Horizontal black and neon yellow lines link the shoe to the collection's overarching inspiration of speed. The "love to win, hate to lose" logo on the heel is a nod to Ronaldo's inspiration as he explodes past how opponents on his way towards goal.

This same vibrant color combination classifies the CR7 Mercurial Lite shin guards, CR7 Prestige ball and CR7 Cheyenne backpack, while additional training items appear in monochrome.

The speed inspiration is also clear to see in the lifestyle items in the collection, particularly with the CR7 Pique Polo and CR7 V-neck T-shirt. There it is represented in the flashes of green, blue, red and white that run across the body.

The Graphic Top for training opts for green and cream stripes combined with white shorts. The apparel pieces are constructed of premium materials and carry the CR7 trademark "love to win, hate to lose" heart-with-cross logo.

The white button-down Saturday Jacket with drawstring hem and front patch pockets and vintage-inspired Nike Tennis Classic, Cristiano's favorite sneaker, complete the summer range.

Tito Vilanova's Reunite Should Galvanize In-form Barcelona - SWOL

After 8 weeks of treatment in Nyc for a neck growth, Barcelona coachATito Vilanova is finally back in Spain. Vilanovaas health has been on several peopleas head as the coach endured a cancer relapse after he had to get a saliva gland growth removed back November 2011. While Vilanova was away, Jordi Roura took care of the staff. Roura, Vilanovaas assistant, was in constant experience of the coach about decision making. During Barcelona fits, Vilanova communicated with the teamas instructors via mobile phoneAfrom Nyc. During Vilanovaas shortage the staff experienced a rough spot once they had to handle strong groups inside a little while of time. From February 20th to March 2nd, times were played four by the team losing on threeAoccasions. Two of these suits were againstAarch-rivals Real Madrid, who beat Barcelona in two consecutively; once for the Spanish Cup, which eliminated Barcelona from the competition and yet another amount of time in the category. During that stretch, Barcelona also fell 2-0 to AC Milan in Italy in the Champions League Round of 16. Their only success through the stretch was in the home against an often hard Sevilla team. Barcelonaas report throughout Tito Vilanovaas lack was 8 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties. Arguably the most remarkable game was Barcelonaas extraordinary comeback in the Champions League second leg against AC Milan, winning 4-0 to qualify for the quarterfinals. Fire should be only added by vilanovaas return to a currently hot Barcelona that are trying to become European kings yet again and Manhattan project Liga winners. Cristian Tello thinks that Jordi Roura did a magnificent work going in when Tito was out recovering, but, he is happy with Vilanovaas return. While they face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions LeagueAquarterfinals the next few games for the Catalans is likely to be season-defining. Vilanova might not be able to count with Pedro for the forthcoming games because the Spain global experienced aAsmallAtear in his leg all through Spainas World Cup qualifying match against France. He is as a result of skip 10 games, meaning he'll perhaps not enjoy this week-end. He was already planning to skip the first PSG fixture because of yellow card accumulation.

FC Barcelona: The Enigma that is Alexis Sanchez - Barca Blaugranes (blog)

The future of FC Barcelona's forward Alexis Sanchez has been a hot topic once again lately, with a move back to Italy rumored. But is it really the best time for Alexis to leave the Catalan capital?

A lot of virtual (and actual) ink has been used to write about Alexis Sanchez, by experts and non-experts. Among both groups opinions are divided, with the prevailing talking point being: "Why do you need a winger that can't score?".

So, let's start this at that very point. Alexis has never in his, albeit relatively short, career been regarded as a scorer. Never has that been his primary talent. In fact, Alexis' finishing has often been questioned even before he joined FC Barcelona. His career high in goals scored is a "measly" 15 tallies, achieved last season, in his first year with Barcelona. Prior to that his career high was 12, achieved the season before last. But think about it,15 goals is nothing to sneeze at, especially when you consider that goals from the right wing have been difficult to come by for Barça in recent years.

This season hasn't been very kind to Alexis, who has only scored five times so far. It wasn't for the lack of trying, though. The Chilean is often among the most dangerous players on the Blaugrana team. Pretty much the only problem in his game is his finishing. The fact that some of the best saves against Barcelona were made on Alexis also didn't help his confidence. I'm not trying to make excuses for him, because the simple truth is that Alexis should've scored more than he has.

But has Alexis' direct competitor for the starting right wing spot, Pedro, done any better? Only by a smidgen, yet somehow his struggles have eluded the wrath of fans. Pedro is a former 20+ goalscorer, but even though that he and Alexis have similar scoring records in the last season and a half only Alexis is getting ridiculed for his poor finishing.

Pedro is nearly a lifelong Barcelona player, joining Barcelona's youth ranks at the age of 17. So unlike Alexis, he is fully familiar with the Barcelona system, which makes his lack of form more puzzling. Alexis, meanwhile, is still a pupil of "tiki-taka". Right about now, quite a few of you were thinking: "But he's been with the team for a year and a half, how much time does he need?" And you're right, partially at least. Alexis has had ample time to adjust to Spain and the style of football played on the Iberian Peninsula, but are 20 months enough? Rare are footballers that have made a seamless transition to Barcelona in recent history. Alexis, obviously, isn't one of them. Alexis has never in his career seen anything remotely similar to Barça's football, despite playing professional football in three countries, so I'm positive he would appreciate more time to get into the Barça rhythm.

To make one last offensive comparison between Alexis and Pedro before I move on to Alexis' better attributes. Alexis is a very versatile player. He can play on both wings and can, if necessary, fill in at striker and even at false No. 9. Pedro, however, is "only" a winger, but like Alexis he too can play on both sides of the pitch.

Which made me think; does the fact that Alexis can play all those positions actually hurt him? While it is true that he featured mostly on either wing in his Barcelona career, he has been used at the point of the attack as well, especially in his first season in Catalonia. What I'm trying to say is, had Alexis been used only at his preferred position, the right wing, would he be in a better position than he is now? I personally think so. Why? Because he would be able to focus on one position and not try to impress on two, even three, at the same time.

The two wing positions, at first sight, don't appear to be very different, but they actually are. Not only is the pitch "the wrong way around" when you play on the other side, there are tactical differences between the wing positions also. If it were so easy to switch wings Pedro would be very good on both sides, but he's better on the right. Cristian Tello also prefers one wing to the other, the left, as does David Villa. The same is true for full backs, most of whom don't know how to play on the opposite side. Only a select few are really comfortable on both sides of the pitch, but those too prefer one to the other.

But enough with the negativity. Let's now take a look at areas where Alexis truly excels. First, he's constantly on the move. Take a look at any game tape and you'll very rarely see him standing still. He's always looking to get open and receive a pass. His movement also allows other players, Messi for example, more space. Very few players exist that can sustain such movement, with so many long sprints, over a full 90 minutes.

And secondly, Alexis is an excellent defender. In my opinion, he's actually one of the best wingers in the world when it comes to defending. He's a master at tracking back and pressuring the ball carrier. The fact that he's better at defending than Pedro is quite a statement, because Pedro is very good in that aspect of the game.

But why would a team even need a winger that's good at defending you ask? Well, because in a club like Barça, where both full backs have so many attacking responsibilities it's imperative that they get help from wingers. And like it or not, depending on you're stance on Alexis, Barcelona is a better team defensively when the Chilean is on the pitch.

Have you asked yourself, at any point this season, why so many goals were scored down Barcelona's left side? It's because Jordi Alba hasn't gotten nearly as much help defensively as Dani Alves has. And that's because we have seen mostly Andres Iniesta or Villa on the left wing, which is responsible for helping Alba. When Alexis has played there Alba wasn't exposed as much, and that is just one example of Alexis' important role in the offense.

Over the last roughly 1000 words I've gotten a lot off my chest regarding Alexis. But if I had to sum it all up in one sentence it would be: Alexis deserves to get one more season at FC Barcelona, and a chance to nail down a starting XI spot. All the hard work he's put in, combined with many injuries, especially in his first season, should not go unnoticed. And if Pedro is considered an automatic "keeper" for next season, Alexis should be too.

5 Biggest Reasons for Washington Wizards' Recent Upswing

Try 23 games below .500 far. With an 11-34 record, and tied for the Charlotte Bobcats for two dubious honors— worst records in the Eastern Conference and worst record in the NBA, the Washington Wizards are having a rough 2012-13 campaign.

Recently, however, the Wiz have picked it up a bit and played their best ball all season. They've won four of their last 10 games, and they have notched a win against one of the league's best squads, the Oklahoma City Thunder.

It's certainly no coincidence that the Wizards started playing some of their best ball as soon as John Wall returned. After finally coming back to the line-up after pervasive knee trouble, Wall has brought some new life to the Wiz.

Just his presence on the court enhances the line-up. His dribble penetration, his speed, his improved shooting form are among the reasons they've missed him. While you might scoff at the thought of the Wizards being a dangerous team, Wall has shown flashes of what he's capable of doing.

In their recent win over the Denver Nuggets, John Wall flexed his inner floor general. He only attempted nine field goals, and instead opted to facilitate, something the Wiz have missed in his absence. In their win on the road against Denver, John wall notched a solid double-double—14 points and 12 assists, exactly what you want from your point guard.

Wall has among the best handles in the game, and the fact he has looked a lot more refined in his role shows what he's capable of down the road. Rather than all flash and nothing else, we're finally seeing Wall put together some solid performances, and one of the most impressive was undoubtedly that win in the Mile High City.

Jordan Crawford is still a work in progress, but lately, he, like Wall, has settled in a bit more in his role as a scorer. The high arcing, one-on-one shot maker nailed a huge shot in a thrilling buzzer-beater win against Portland recently, and that one shot encapsulated much of his improvement over their stretch.

When Crawford becomes the main focal point on offense, it becomes a bit like live or die by offense. Crawford is not shy at all about shooting; he is in the top 25 has far as shots attempted per 48 minutes. That one stat says a lot about how Crawford plays the game—a fearless shot-taker who loves the opportunity to score.

Now of course, that attitude doesn't come without its drawbacks. Crawford definitely overshoots a lot, and it is part of why he's shot sub-40-percent in recent seasons. In 2012-13, however, Crawford is shooting 42-percent from the field, a career high field goal percentage-wise.

By simply knocking down shots when he needs to, and also recognizing when he should pass, Crawford is showing progress. The buzzer beater in Portland definitely proves he is absolutely fearless, so despite the poor shooting in his past two seasons, Crawford is maturing as a scorer and as a teammate.

Despite inconsistency, Beal has balled out on numerous occasions. Similar to Jordan Crawford's huge shot against the Portland Trail Blazers, Beal hit a huge shot against Oklahoma City. With .3 seconds left on the clock, Beal knocked down a shot to give the Washington Wizards a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Believe it or not, this wasn't a game of 2K, the Wizards actually beat the Thunder in real life, and part of the reason why is Beal's hot shooting during their stretch of better play.

Using the Thunder game as an example of his solid output, that game really showcased a lot of what Beal is capable of doing once he refines his game. Despite shooting 7-of-17 from the field, Beal knocked down five three-pointers, taking the initiative as far as shooting the ball even if it meant overshooting a tad.

While a lot of critics of Beal and Crawford certainly point to their poor field-goal percentages as a knock against their fearlessness in shooting, a lot of credit has to be given to the rook for knocking down the big shot. Beal is shooting sub 40-percent, but a similar trend is evident in Crawford's early years.

Now this isn't to say that Beal or Crawford are incredible scorers just yet, they both certainly have a ways to go, but similar to Crawford, Beal has emerged as a guy they can count on to make big shots.

Beal has definitely shown glimpses of becoming an elite scorer, and while it's still early, Beal will further adjust to the pro game and get better as time progresses.

As long as he can stay healthy, the Wiz need to ride Beal's hot streaks as long as they can, and if the Thunder game proved anything, it was that Beal is another guy they can count on to make big shots.

While Wall is certainly more famous and Beal and Crawford both have big highlights, Emeka Okafor is relegated to relative anonymity on the Wizards. Okafor has always had a reputation for being a solid rebounder, and he's brought his same ability to snatch boards to the Wiz.

Offensively, Okafor is limited, but his grit and hustle has given the Wiz a solid presence in the middle. Okafor in the Wiz win against the Hawks, blowout at home vs. the Magic and thriller against OKC, managed to drop double-doubles.

With two shooters like Beal and Crawford on the same team, it's fair to say a lot of bricks will be thrown up. Emeka has done a great job giving the Wizards extra possessions on misses, and that ensures they'll be able to survive times of stagnancy from the perimeter.

All three of those games were great examples of Emeka either sustaining the offense's rhythm, or denying the other squad second-chance points.

If the Wizards are to keep playing as well as they have shown as of late, they need Emeka to keep doing what he's doing on the boards. He isn't going to drop 30 on anybody, but Emeka just needs to be Emeka and show up and do what he does best—finish putbacks, control the boards, be a physical presence.

Among the most significant obstacles aside from opponents or fatigue is the inevitability of injuries. They are unfortunately a part of the fabric of the NBA, and when they happen in bunches on one team, they can show. Over stretches this season and last, the Wizards have at times been unable to put their entire unit on the floor.

Whether it was Nene, John Wall or others, losing players from injuries hurts teams on more than the lack of talent front. Aside from having to use reserves instead of your best talent, you're also preventing your team from getting into a good rhythm and establishing chemistry.

The Wizards a team that still need to better familiarize themselves with one another, and it can only happen once their best players can stick together on the floor as a collective.

As evidenced by their big time win against OKC, despite not having John Wall or Nene—two of their best players, they still edged their way to a win. This is a team that, despite their abysmal record, actually wants to win.

Even with two of their best players out, Bradley Beal and others stepped up and got the job done, and that type of grit and fight is what will be necessary to work their way towards improving.

While there's no telling what a completely healthy Wizards team could do, there is no question that their ability to overcome the mounting injuries deserves credit, and with another disappointing injury to star guard John Wall, and wrist issue with Beal, the Wizards will have to overcome yet another obstacle.

Despite being without some of their talent yet again, the Wizards will certainly show some resilience and pull out a few more under-handed victories just as they have against the likes of the Thunder.

UCLA Basketball: Bruins Must Balance Strike for Effective Tournament

The UCLA Bruins come in a prime position to really have a great Pac-12 tournament and following NCAA tournament, however not unless they can broaden their attack. Nothing against head instructor Ben Howland, but he appears all too content to have the ball in star freshman guard Shabazz Muhammad's arms when crunch time rolls around. It's hard at fault him for doing this, as Muhammad brings the crew in scoring with 18.1 points per game and has shot a fine 41.5 percent from three-point range. In fact, Muhammad's ability for scoring has played an integral role in UCLA rank 25th in the country in scoring. However, despite whatAKemba Walker's heroics of 2011 may possibly suggest, one person can not carry a team to victory in the big dance. Baseball is the squad, and a group sport that most useful demonstrates that's often the final one standing. It is important that UCLA keep Shabazz Muhammad because the head of the crime, but at the same time frame not become very reliant on himJayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports Just look at last season's Kentucky Wildcats. From Anthony Davis to Doron Lamb, everyone on that group knew their part and chemistry was sky high. It's no wonder that the group was able to get it all despite its key people being freshmen. That's not saying that communication on UCLA is bad. Actually, it's among the best in the nation. Light emitting diode by Larry Drew II's 7.8 assists per game, the Bruins rank sixth in assists with 17 per game. That all being explained, if UCLA does indeed need to create a statement starting in its meeting competition and in to the national one, the strategy is simple: use all weapons to maximum capability. Kyle Anderson is merely one person that the Bruins may call upon in the case of a spell from MuhammadMark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Activities This implies that while it is very important to Muhammad to obtain involved, it is even more so that Jordan Adams be as well. Muhammad's other newcomer is averaging 15.1 points per game, and is simply another go-to guy for Drew II to depend on. The same can be said for major rebounder (eight RPG) Kyle Anderson and large male Travis Wear, both of whom can be solid bad alternatives in the color. View it in this way. Guess UCLA is in a key competition game, be it the Pac-12 or national tourney, and Muhammad suddenly goes cold. He might be the team's top scorer and lead the Bruins in field-goal attempts, but continuing to get him the ball and hoping for the most effective is not the clear answer, should that condition come to be. Relatively, Howland must begin pulling up plays that not call for Muhammad to put the group on his back crunch time. The main element to surviving a significant game is planning, and UCLA has the tools to be more prepared than any other squad. By diversifying their assault, they give themselves a distinct advantage and become even more dangerous. Otherwise, exactly how Brigham Young University was with Jimmer Fredette, the assault becomes predictable, and a promising team immediately becomes sunk.

David Beckham settles for Champions League with PSG

David Beckham has gone to Paris for his medical. The Guardian reports that he has chosen PSG over eleven other offers.

David Beckham is set for a return to Champions League football as he is in France to sign a deal with Paris Saint-Germain. The former England captain will be unveiled later at a news conference.

Beckham was the first British footballer to play one hundred Champions League matches during his stints with Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan. Currently, he is available for free as his contract with LA Galaxy expired at the end of the 2012 MLS season.

Recently, Beckham has began training with Arsenal but Arsene Wenger put an end to any transfer speculations that were arising. He denied any interest in signing Becks and said that the arrangement was for his fitness purposes only.

According to Guardian, the 37 year old midfielder had offers from twelve clubs from all over the world. Alongwith PSG, AS Monaco had also shown interest in Beckham. But the Paris club was the far better choice – PSG sit top of the Ligue 1 on goal difference and are preparing to face Valencia in the UCL Round of 16.

Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and their director of football Leonardo will be present to reveal David Beckham as the new PSG player. The deal is said to be in the region of £150,000-a-week and it is likely to be a six-month deal with the option of extension.

This transfer will also give Beckham the chance to join former teammates from his days in Milan – Thiago Silva and Zalatan Ibrahimovic – and coach Carlo Ancelotti.

In the January window, PSG had trimmed their squad by off-loading some of their fringe players. However, Beckham's arrival would raise the global profile of the club significantly.

Chelsea Hamilton Academical face tough four activities in eight days - Oscar - Crunchsports.com

Chelsea playmaker Oscar admits the Blues face a tough week because they prepare to play four games in seven days. Chelsea travel to Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday then have an Cup quarter-final replay against Manchester United on Easter Monday. Host is then played by the Blues to Rubin Kazan in the Europa League on Thursday, before three days later travelling to Sunderland in the Premiership. Oscar, who played for Brazil within their 1-1 draw with Russia at Stamford Bridge on Monday night demands it's usual to play several games in quick succession at a large club, but admits a fitting pile-up such as this one is not used to him. "There are so many activities at this time, and them all are important," he said. "We have Southampton first and then Manchester United 48 hours later. But that's just how it usually are at a club like Chelsea. "We usually have a lot of games, though maybe four in a week - once we have this week - is just a bit different." Temporary manager Rafael Benitez has spun his team possible as much and will continue to achieve this in the coming days. And because the west London attire pursuit achievement in the FA Cup and Europa League and search well for a top-four complete in the Premier League, Oscar contends no sport will be taken lightly. "We need certainly to play and sleep as most useful we can," he added. "It is just a week that might be really important for our season. We've activities in every three remaining games, but weare not thinking that one could become more important compared to other. "We want to gain all of the games and we want to do along with we can in all the competitions. We wonat sacrifice one for the others."

The one that got away (and the ones we simply ... - Chelsea FC 360

As a football fan there is few things that are more painful than watching a player your club discarded becoming a real top player for someone else and unfortunately, as a result of the pretty ruthless setup at Stamford Bridge this is a worryingly common theme at the club. The thought that Chelsea are a club who let far too many talents slip through their fingers whilst wasting incredible amounts of money on 'big name' flops is a common one, and it's not entirely unreasonable.

The Dutch winger, known for his exceptional pace, dribbling and an absolutely wonderful left foot, had a pretty torrid time at Stamford Bridge (if such can be said of three years in which he got his hands on the Barclays Premier League trophy twice, along with one each of the FA cup and League cup) as the famously injury prone Dutchman only managed to start 74 games on top of his 32 substitute appearances, scoring 19 goals. He made some very good contributions in both title runs and set up the winning goal in the  Carling cup final against Arsenal, but his short lived Chelsea career was pretty much summed up in the 2007 FA cup final against Manchester United, despite not being fully recovered from his last injury he was subbed on at half time but still wasn't in good enough condition make it to the end of extra time and was subsequently subbed back off again. Chelsea won the final 1-0 and I think this summarised his role at the club pretty well, he was a nice player to have in the squad and without a doubt an exceptionally talented one, but we could play an injured Arjen Robben for more than half of the final and still win, he was a luxury and not a necessity and it is well known that Jose Mourinho is not a man known for his patience.

He was sold off the Real Madrid at the end of the 06/7 season for 35 million euros which is a price which  seemed fantastic at the time but fast forward to present day where he plays for Bayern Munich and Chelsea fans have had many opportunities to admire quite what they've missed out on. Forget the missed penalty and the poor performance at the Allianz in May (after all what Chelsea fan would complain about that) and Robben has come on leaps and bounds and is now widely recognized as one of the best players in the world. He still has a wide array of doubters that will say he is too greedy or criticize his ability to seemingly only do anything of any value with his left foot, but you simply cannot argue with the statistics – 60 goals in just 109 games including a wide array of absolutely stunning goals as he led FC Hollywood to 1 DFB cup, 1 German Championship title (with another surely wrapped up this season) and two Champions League finals as well as a World Cup finalists medal, albeit runners up.

The amount of goals that he has managed to score from a wide position is simply phenomenal and if you look back at the Chelsea squads since Robben was sold, they've all had one thing in common, can you guess it?

Incase you didn't, it was the lack of a true out an out winger, in particular one who could score goals – Florent Malouda aside Chelsea had nothing in the Arjen Robben mould until this season and it really does make you wonder with a little more patience on behalf of both Jose and the club, how much more could we have won with him in the squad?

So Robbens one player that slipped through the Chelsea net and blossomed elsewhere, here's a few other names that spring to mind when thinking of similar cases: Glen Johnson, Scott Parker, Scott Sinclair (albeit hasn't blossomed but had real potential as a wide man), Miroslav Stoch (scored goal of the year last year, if you haven't seen I seriously recommend you youtube it), Daniel Sturridge, Fabio Borini and Nemanja Matic – Particularly in the case of Matic it is incredible to see quite how good a player can be when given the game time they need to grow as a player and I hope to write a few articles at a later date, keeping track of the young players Chelsea have released that are really making progress but are doing so out of the spotlight of a club like Chelsea.

The main reason I chose to highlight such a negative issue at Chelsea is the terrible fear that it will happen again, Chelsea had over 20 players out on loan this season nearly all of whom have the potential to become quality international footballers, but as always there a few who stand head and shoulders (quite literally in the case of the first two) above the rest and this is of course our Belgian trio of loanees – Romelu Lukaku, Thibaut Courtois and Kevin De Bruyne, although for this article I will be focussing on just Lukaku and Courtois.

Lukaku joined the club a Chelsea supporter and an admirer of the player he has so often been compared to, Didier Drogba. Didiers boots are about as hard to fill as they come, as shown by the huge amounts of pressure put on any Chelsea centre forward (in particular poor Torres)  and frankly neither of our first team strikers this team have stepped up to the challenge. Fernando Torres has scored 15 goals this season in 39 games and Demba Ba has started 10 and scored 4 – Goal ratios of 0.38 and 0.4 goals per game respectively don't look horrific but when you consider two centre forwards at a club challenging on most fronts have only managed 19 goals between them by the end of March, perhaps it does.

Lukaku on the other hand has 13 goals in 27 starts – A superior ratio of 0.48 goals per game and all of this without the help of probably the best attacking midfield on the planet at the moment, He has pace, power, technique, vision and hasn't even turned 20 yet. It quite frankly beggars belief that he wasn't given a chance at Stamford Bridge this season but he was farmed out to West Brom where he has shown absolutely everything that's so desperately needed at Chelsea right now.

Because of Lukakus prolific scoring in the Premier League he has slipped under the radar this year to most followers of English football, but those who watching are certainly very impressed with the 20 year old Belgium number 1. For starters being first team for both Atletico Madrid and the Belgium national squad (which isn't exactly short on keepers, with Mignolet and Gillet both fighting for that number 1 shirt) at only 20 years old is absolutely incredible. He has a better clean sheet and save ratio than Petr Cech this season and is pretty widely regarded as the the second best goalkeeper in the Liga BBVA behind Iker Casillas, which is hardly a surprise considering the spain stopper is almost certainly the best keeper in the world at the moment.

Courtois' name has been bandied around a lot as a potential pawn in the deal for Ramadel Falcao and this is not a story that inspires me at all, I for one would certainly rather Chelsea take their chances with Lukaku and Ba as forwards and offload Torres in the summer, than throw a player who has every bit of potential to be the greatest goalkeeper of this era away for another big name striker yet to prove his worth in the Premier League.

Here's hoping that Mr Abramovich takes a good hard look at his options and see's that he has no reason to blow £50 million in search of a colombian diamond to spearhead his new age team, when he's already got his very own Belgian diamond mine.

GolfBlogger Enters Tenth Year

With all the things going on today, it appears that I've overlooked the birthdaya'blogiversary, if you willa'of GolfBlogger.Com. The initial GolfBlogger article appeared on March 22, 2004. It has been a really active year, both personally and professionally. The highlight is that I printed three books: two on golf, and one a history of Halloween horrors. I also had the opportunity a year ago to attend the USGAas Senior Open as a part of the media, and the LPGAas Jamie Farr occasion in Toledo. Both were amazing experiences that I treasure. Yet another highlight: I finally managed to satisfy my friend-in-golf-blogging, Tony Korologos, of Hooked on Golf Blog. Tony was on a to Michigan and he was met by me at the Black Lake course in Onaway. He was, beat me well within our fit and when I expected, a genuine gentleman. Eventually, I managed to get to Myrtle Beach for the very first time to perform a few programs, notably Greg Normanas course at Barefoot Landing. In the past year, Iave posted 1,127 articles, getting the grand total to 8,875 and around 8 million words.A In this, I continue to avoid the fate of hundreds of other individuals who have started a tennis bloga'that of writing several pieces and then dropping interest; the web is littered with the corpses of forgotten blogs. And yet, through all of it, GolfBlogger remains a part-time energy. High school is taught by me as my day job, and although the conclusion of my teaching job is in view, I can't yet turn GolfBlogger into a full time job (although that certainly may be the purpose). During the life of the blog, Iave also revealed some 5,000 facebook threads and this year was acknowledged by the cultural full firm Kred to be in the very best 5% of web influencers. All the achievement of GolfBlogger is, I think, due to absolute resistance on my part. I write each and every day, nearly without fail (there is the occasional weekend lapse). GolfBlogger is, to my knowledge, the next oldest tennis website (the other is less than 8 weeks older), and perhaps the oldest continuously writing. There really were no models to follow along with, when I began. I didn't wish to turn it into news that was simply reprinted by a site on the PGA Tour because there are quite a few of those now), (and Iam glad I didnat. Rather, my versions were Instapundit, Gizmodo and BoingBoing. Like Instapundit, I decided to present brief, pithy reviews and links to (golf) news; as with Gizmodo, I planned to link to new (golf) services and products and review them; and following BoingBoingas lead, I'd simply reveal and link to (golf related) things that interest me or that I found cool. Eventually, as with any blog, I'd present observations on lifea'in this case, my golfing life. The blog was kept by iave going because I love to create. Before careers were changed by me becoming a teacher, I was an expert manager and ghostwriter. I also love tennis, and so the fit was an all natural. Actually, I discover that writing for GolfBlogger has become a compulsion. Iad like to take this chance to thank the many, many hundreds who make a practice of visiting the site, and the vendors who make it financially feasible for me to keep it all going.

Rashad Evans Looking to Silence Critics and Avoid UFC Release Against Hendo

With the UFC laying down the hammer on so many jobs, Evans could find himself looking for work elsewhere if he loses a third consecutive fight. He is slated to take on MMA legend Dan Henderson at UFC 161 in a bout that could determine his UFC future.

It's good to get in there with somebody like Dan and answer a lot of critics and to show everybody that I am still one of the best guys in the weight class.

This is the type of fight that keeps you up at night, because you want to do well. My back is against the wall. And this is when I perform at my best. My manager Bill Robinson always says, 'You're either one fight away from getting a title shot and becoming champion or you're two losses away from being cut from UFC.'

Evans' messy falling out with Jones and former trainer Greg Jackson led to one of the most emotional grudge matches in MMA history. Every fight is important, but there was something about Evans' beef with Jones that carried even more weight than the UFC title.

Jones walked away with the unanimous decision and the UFC title. Evans admitted to MMAJunkie.com that he considered retiring after the loss.

In the end, he decided to keep competing, and at UFC 156, he was stunned once again in a surprising upset loss to Nogueira. While Nogueira deserves credit for an incredible performance, it's tough to dismiss the fact that Evans looked unenthused and sluggish throughout the bout.

I must admit I did get to a point where I wasn't having fun and went through the motions. And that's where I am right now. When I started fighting I enjoyed everything part of it: I enjoyed training so much, I enjoyed learning. But lately it had gotten to the point where it was something that I had to do, it'd become somewhat monotonous.

Before losing a controversial split decision to Lyoto Machida at UFC 157, Henderson was riding a four-fight win streak and was listed as the No. 1 contender for the UFC title.

Has the ship finally sailed on Evans' career, or will he defeat Henderson and reemerge as a UFC light heavyweight title contender?

Manchester United 'target' Mario Gotze available to shift - The Independent

German wonderkid Mario Gotze has suggested that he may be ready to accept a proceed to certainly one of Europeas top groups, with Manchester United touted as an spot. The Borussia Dortmund winger was in sparkling form for his country last week, as Joachim Lowas guys glided past Kazakhstan in Nuremberg 4-1. His sideas cause was helped by him with his fifth international target, increasing the seven group objectives he has for his team within an impressive season thus far. Despite dominating the Bundesliga for days gone by two months, Dortmund appear to have surrendered the title to Bayern Munich these times. A successful Champions League run may have padded domestic disappointments, but Gotze may feel he must leave to further a blossoming career. He said: aClubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United are beautiful, and playing in another top group would form me and help me develop as a player. But I am maybe not convinced that far ahead at this time. I am happy in Germany and am happy with just how things are going. Other things continues to be a considerable ways off." The youngster only signed a new long-term agreement last year, but with the departure of Shinji Kagawa for United last summer, and the possible exchange of Robert Lewandowski, Jurgan Klopp will find it hard to convince one of is own outstanding crown jewels to keep.

Kompany: Man City may hit right back at United - ESPN.co.uk

Vincent Kompany promises Manchester City should come right back stronger after studying the lessons from their likely failure to defend the Premier League name this year. Area currently walk Manchester United by 15 factors in the Premier League but leader Kompany is assured he and his team-mates will produce the best result next year. In the meantime the Belgium international, who is likely to make his comeback after 8 weeks on the sidelines with a calf damage against Macedonia on Tuesday, desires to lift wallpaper this year in the FA Cup. He informed Sky Sports: "You always want to go for the games and you always want to go for the very best. It has been experienced by me in exactly the same way as every other player. Our team has been wanted by me to accomplish well. "In basketball, eventually, you usually have to have successful and a loser so I believe we'll study from what happened and we'll grow stronger again. We still have a great work in the FA Cup." City are much nearer to third-placed Chelsea and fourth-placed Tottenham than United but Kompany asserts he's maybe not focused on the contenders who might take second place from them. He added: "I am maybe not looking a lot of. I know it is clichAd, but I think we must focus on our own features and only look at every game and say: 'OK, we have got a chance to win this one, so let's do it.' That ought to be our only aim."

Borussia Dortmund Ignite Interest in Birmingham Town Striker Edin Dzeko - SWOL

Summer time is rapidly approaching and Manchester Cityas subject hopes, like Borussia Dortmundas, are all but gone. AAccording to Sunlight, the German leaders are apparently enthusiastic about Manchester City frontman Edin Dzeko. The 27-year-old striker has faced constant pressure at City this season, with an intense striking challenge ensuing to get into Roberto Mancinias starting XI on a regular basis. AWith both Sergio aKuna Aguero and Carlos Tevez both stealing the spotlight, the Bosnian has however been forced to function in numerous cameo shows throughout every season. Additional playing time may be found by dzeko elsewhere as Dortmund are raising their fascination with theAA27 million striker. His interest was recently stated by ageneral manager Michael Zorc in the striker, but limited to the best price (via Sunlight ): He's a fantastic forward and a person you ought to be keen on. AHowever, there's also still notably of an economic factor. Because Dzeko is under contract at Manchester City beyond the end of the summer season ait will be down to pure maths. It is likely that the Citizensa asking price for the Bosnian might be astronomical; nevertheless, as Robert Lewandowskias potential continues to keep unclear, attracting an additional striker could easily reinforce the striking ability of the team. Though failing to function in a normal starting part for the Citizens this year, Dzeko really has proven he can add to his tally with 12 objectives currently in the EPL. If Lewandowski is to move ahead from Dortmund, the present City talisman might replace the Poland international completely. ABoth Lewandowski and Dzeko are high strikers who possess exemplary aerial power at both ends of the pitch, as well as stand solid on the ball to produce play with onrushing teammates. The top-class strikeras future is up in the air much like many players in similar positions. ADzeko has proven deadly in 2010, yet remains to see minimal minutes. AFurthermore, he might make any boss happy and might find his regular place in the starting XI back in the Bundesliga where his career took off in the initial place.

Did Birmingham Area Overreact To E-Cigarette User? - talkSPORT.co.uk

Tuesday, March 26, 2013 It's maybe not uncommon for football clubs to remove unruly fans, and also hold or take time tickets in instances of extremely bad conduct, like tossing items onto the pitch, acting unruly in the stands, or regular utilization of foul or abusive language. However, itas been noted that Manchester City has had away the growing season ticket of 1 of these loyal supporters for something seemingly innocuous: having an e-cigarette. Did they overreact? Based on numerous studies, the baseball fan involved was enjoying a glass or two with friends in the concourse when he got a draw from his ecigarette device. Protection instantly greeted him and escorted him in to a area where he was asked and told that vaping on the grounds was not granted. Protection then seized his season ticket and escorted them out of the stadium. A letter was later the fan received by days from Cityas head of security, He was informed by Peter Fletcher who informed his season ticket was henceforth stopped unless a reasonable explanation might be provided. Fletcher wrote: "This is just a forbidden item as previously mentioned in the conditions and terms of one's season ticket. Your season ticket has been now suspended by me pending any explanation that you may wish to give. Any representations you may need to make should be in writing." Since the story broke some months ago there has been several questions raised about whether or not Fletcher used good sense when dealing with the e-cig using lover. People who agree with Fletcher's decision point out that the language prohibiting electronic cigarettes in the arena is clearly spelled out. They say the fan will be accordingly punished for participating in an activity that some individuals find offensive. On the other side of the coin there are those who believe both actions of Fletcher and his security staff were at the very least an overreaction, or even quite heavy-handed as well. They say in comparison to some of the other things that go on at City activities, utilizing a Vapestick electric cigarette on the concourse is relatively moderate. Perhaps a first warning could have been more appropriate than what actually happened. Perhaps a better method to handle the problem would have been for the security staff to address the lover by saying something like, "you're not allowed to utilize your electroniccigarette here; please put it away." Had the fan continued vaping out of plain belligerence then there could have been some cause for further action. But, by all accounts, the fan offered no resistance at all. One of many more interesting facets of this history has to do with the different standards being used by different baseball clubs. Other groups, like Burnley, are freely adopting the cigarette alternative, whilst the utilization of digital cigarettes is not permitted at Manchester City. In if it can perhaps work out a proper deal with an e-cig model, fact, that group could even wind up promoting e-cigarettes printed with its own name. Soccer groups that are adopting e-cigarettes are doing so with the knowledge that many of their supporters are smokers who are limiting their amount of time in the arenas because of restricted smoking bans. If endorsing e-cigarettes can get these supporters back once again to games and spending money on other items like food and drinks, it seems like a worthwhile thing to do. Enhance that the advertising resources that groups may generate through offers or sponsorships with e-cig manufacturers and all of it begins to produce common sense. When all is said and done, every soccer club has the directly to figure out what will or won't be allowed within their services. Unfortunately, in this instance it did not workout too well for the Manchester City fan involved. Maybe in future, steps may be taken to ensure situations like this are handled with a little more good sense.

Considering the Weaknesses and Strengths of Germanys Multiple...

Against Kazakhstan Germany prearranged with out a identified striker in a competitive game for initially in its history. It was a milestone tactical decision that displayed both a developing talent pool of fighting midfielders in German football and the acclimatization to a pattern in football tactics. With more and more of the versatile and complex attacking players being LAw and incorporated increasing his tactical arsenal, exactly what are Germanyas choices in the years ahead? ALet us examine the various tactical clusters LAw has used and at his disposal and the strengths and weaknesses of each in the situation of Germanyas ongoing growth as a team. 4-2-3-1 This really is the status quo and has been the standard under LAw since he first used it at the 2008 EUROs against Portugal in the quarterfinals. The change served Germany on their method to the ultimate then and has been reliable since. AIt has been a system for a two straight semifinal runs at major international competitions, a record-breaking unbeaten work leading up and going into the EUROs in 2012 and a way of adding all the up and coming talent. AIt is also prone to stay the creation in the near future Germany versus. Holland, 3-0, 2011 Benefits Simply put, it's a tried and tested program. AGermany have been by using this for well over five decades now, and most Bundesliga clubs have adopted it as well meaning that the players are used to its nuances and more comfortable with its tactical startup. AThe majority of Bundesliga groups utilize the 4-2-3-1 as do the various youth clubs through which all the national team players came through. AFamiliarity breeds persistence and that has very much been the case with this development over time. Weaknesses: The weaknesses certainly are a bit subjective and dependent on a teamas employees and a coachas meaning. AInherently, the development is defensive in nature. The midfield was consolidated by ait from one defensive expert in the 4-4-2 Ato two similar parts. That encouraged tidier control and better defensive protection but it compromised room out wide. Once they pay for the insufficient a second striker at the center the two broad males atop the 4-2-3-1 are wing forwards significantly more than left and right midfielders and frequently compromise house to their rear. When playing on the left the years, making whoever was playing behind him stranded that's already been a complaint of Lukas Podolski. Another significant aspect could be the usage of an individual striker. ATheoretically, with a new player in the aholea and two wide forwards he should have lots of help and over time Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez have each performed well in this setup. AHowever, the problem occurs when clubs secure in great quantities and crowd out that single striker. No further in a position to hold up the ball or bring others into the game, groups in many cases are required to submit wayward crosses and challenge acceptably cover. Meanwhile, the strikers need to make an effort to create possibilities themselves with two center-backs tailing them. That's been the case frequently when Gomez was on the area and also an increasing concern with Kloseas drop in pace. 4-2-3-1 w/ aFalse 9a In writing this isn't any unique of the above 4-2-3-1 with the exception of having an midfielder up top in the place of an and out striker. AThat variation makes all the difference in the world though, and the difficulty to conform to the problems presented by a standard striker in the 4-2-3-1 have led many coaches to actually think away from field. ASpain and Barcelona represent the design for the utilization of this unconventional striker and even LAw started entertaining the idea towards the end of 2012. Unlike Barcelona or Spainas 4-3-3, LAw has generated a cross between your Spanish and Germanyas previous type. AHis go-to player up top has been Mario GAtze so far, anything else remains exactly the same, the main difference being that GAtze has a free position. AHe will still be probably the most sophisticated player but is asked to have involved in the build-up and readily interchange with those around him. Germany compared to. Kazakhstan, 3-0, 2013 Strengths: Range and unpredictability. AAs LAw specified in his press conference before the Kazakhstan sport, the idea would be to have an even more mobile and interchangeable top four that doesnat count on primary styles of play or predictable lines of passing. Where before central midfielders might be seen by one seeking to play the ball out wide before giving a corner inside, GAtze may move defenders with him and both the best, remaining or central opponents just take the vacated space and vice versa. The roles are less rigorous and more available to interpretation. Theoretically, it should serves to unsettle defensively organized sides and make full usage of all of the technically capable and quick people Germany has available. Weaknesses: Old-fashioned strikers are still preferred by many clubs around the world for reasons, Germany included. ALAw ensured to emphasize that they can still continue steadily to use a No. 9 moving forward, and truly so. In other words, they're better finishers than everyone on the staff, and when few opportunities prove in the game, you'd frequently want to buy to fall to the player with a proven history of goals. There is also still the casual convenience to playing the ball in the air and using a number of the greater headers in the staff, some thing a new player like Gomez is much more helpful for than say, GAtze or Reus. 4-1-4-1 It has been LAwas go-to plan B through the years. AIt is really a minor yet still notable change that offers the staff included punch in attack. AALAw has primarily used this at the center of games as opposed to from the start but has gone with it from beginning on a couple of occasions before the EUROs when he used Kroos in central midfield alongside sometimes Khedira or Schweinsteiger. ABecause of Kroosa versatility and talents it's more of a variation of the 4-2-3-1 than a system in of itself but two cases demonstrate how it can impact the team and why it is different. Germany compared to. Sweden, 6-2, 2011 Strengths: As previously mentioned above, another attacking reputation can certainly help the playmaker and give more support for the goalscorers. Perhaps the most useful example of this is Germanyas 6-2 gain against Austria in September, 2011. AA little earlier in the day, LAw applied Kroos in similar manner when beating Brazil for initially in 18 years, and it worked brilliantly again versus Austria. AWith Azil and Kroos, Germany basically had two playmakers on the message and three people focused on just rating ahead of them. AAnother high level person also allows the striker to hold inside the box which only amplifies targeting choices. AThose added figures in assault is being an in-game option in the future also why this will probably only be used. Weaknesses: It was a disaster against Switzerland in-may of 2012, where in actuality the 4-1-4-1 worked so well against Austria and Brazil. AThe Swiss won their first match against Germany in almost six years, rating five previous LAwas men and exposing the flaws in this creation. AInstead of Kroos, GAtze was the added man in midfield, which showed that to enjoy this method you need a two-way player to be that extra man. ATo be reasonable, it had been also a makeshift creation with Ter Stegen finding his debut and Azil and GAtze starting together for the initial time. Khedira was trapped in the center without defensive address from his enemies, the trunk line revealed from all aspects and adequate space for the Swiss to counter in. AIt is unlikely that LAw uses this again without two of Kroos, Schweinsteiger or Khedira in there. 3-5-2/3-4-2-1 A creation that's had a significant re-emergence in football over the last couple of years, such as in Serie A and with the Italian national team. AThe current achievement of Juventus and Napoli along with Italy at last yearas EUROs has confirmed the 3-5-2 as a viable formation in the age of the four-man back line and single striker systems. AFor Germany, the 3-5-2, or 3-4-2-1 as LAw translated it, was a fleeting test and for many a substantial failure. ALAw used the formation in a friendly from the Ukraine in November, 2011 to practice a situation where he would have to take a defense to chase a game. Results had been mixed by athe outcome to say the least. Germany vs. Ukraine, 3-3, 2011 Strengths: Preferably, the three-man right back line should offer a team strong defensive cover. AJuventus and Italyas achievement within the last few 2 yrs is centered on a good defensive base. AThe use of two wing-backs who is able to easily slot in alongside the three center-backs and three men in midfield gives a group the cover against any permutation of problems. How a players are create also aids rapid table attacks, as a result of several players sitting heavy and available to play the ball forward easily, if given enough time on it pitch which will fit Germanyas rapid players perfectly. AIf experienced precisely, it can be a program to beat and several groups purchased it to great effect ever sold. Weaknesses: And that time on working out frequency may be the core with this creation. ALAw admitted to little to no practice time before he used it against the Ukraine and the unfamiliarity resulted in a leaky and uncoordinated safety in a system which should otherwise be very sound at the trunk. Naturally, it takes additional time to master communication between three participants than between two. AChristian TrAsch and Dennis Aogo were the two wing-backs on that day and their trouble to get the appropriate balance between defense and attack also provides probably the biggest problem with this specific system, it requires certain forms of participants. ATwo acutely fit and quick wing-backs, a skilled ball-playing center-back who are able to become a sweeper, really skilled midfielders and quick strikers. That focus leaves almost no room for modifications and difference. 4-3-3 This formation haven't been used by law often, and it was an unmitigated disaster, when he did in the semifinals of the EUROs last year against Italy. AThat said, there is a great deal to claim that this development could be the most functional given Germanyas employees and LAw must seriously consider it as a viable alternative moving forward. At the EUROs LAw undoubtedly made one in judgment and played in to Italyas fingers in the place of perform their particular game. The formation and choice itself was difficult as well. AThe improvement of Kroos alongside Khedira and Schweinsteiger was an excellent idea theoretically but driving Azil out wide while beginning Podolski and Gomez was where the idea fell apart. Germany vs. France, 1-2, 2012 Strengths: The 4-4-3 has become the most readily useful development to enhance a teamas correct approaching potential. AWith the players available to LAw it creates more sense than any other. AItas perfectly designed for a aFalse 9a and increases a place of the game Germany still have to focus on, person. AGermany will always have the majority of the ball against smaller clubs but against the kind of Italy, Spain, France, Argentina, an such like. their maintenance sport has fought. AAn additional midfielder, like Kroos or GAndogan as an example, might go a considerable ways in improving that. ANeedless to express, that development in ownership will also have ad-on effects defensively, another aspect of Germanyas sport that absolutely has to improve prior to the World Cup. Weaknesses: Except Azil uses up a broad position or plays as the False 9, there is no real way to fit him into this method and that dilemma may be the largest issue of the 4-3-3 since it applies to Germany. AAzil is probably Germanyas most critical player and most useful musician because the World Cup and removing him from his part to allow for others can come at the trouble of limiting his sport. AHe has played out wide for Bremen before though and often drifts all through activities even when he starts in the heart but assigning him another part is definitely some thing to consider.AThe 4-3-3 might also mean one less slot for the many attackers Germany has and finding just the right front three could take additional time than LAw can afford leading up to the Planet Cup.

World Cup qualifiers - Manchester City

There's a tantalising top of the table clash in Group I where Gael Clichy's France host David Silva and Javi Garcia's Spain at the Stade de France.

Didier Deschamps' men will be hoping to capitalise after Spain's setback against Finland on Friday night when they were held to a 1-1 draw by the defensive minded visitors in Gijon.

The result saw the French leap frog La Roja to the table summit and they will be looking to strengthen their position when the Spanish arrive in Paris on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, James Milner will be hoping to make a start for England when they play group leaders Montenegro in Podgorica.

Joe Hart and Joleon Lescott were both involved as The Three Lions breezed past San Marino on Friday night, but manager Roy Hodgson has made it clear he is resting various players for Tuesday's crucial tie.

A win for the men in white would take them to the top of Group H on 14 points, whereas defeat would see Montenegro more than double their lead to five points.

Elsewhere, Scotland may be on high alert as Aleksandar Kolarov and Matija Nastasic's Serbia set out to make up for Friday's 3-0 defeat by Croatia.

The result leaves the Serbians sitting fourth in Group A and with the Scots rooted to the foot of the table, this should make for an interesting battle in Belgrade.

There will be no place in the starting line-up for Aleks though as his yellow card against Croatia rules him out of the Scottish showdown.

The City keeper will be hoping for a call up after occupying a position on the bench for Friday's 2-2 draw with Hungary.

Across the globe and Argentina solidified their lead atop the South America qualifying group with 23 points in 10 games after a 3-0 victory over Venezuela on Friday.

Next up for Pablo Zabaleta's side is a trip to Bolivia and the Estadio Hernando Siles where they look set to further tighten their grip on the group.

Finally, on loan defender Ryan McGivern may finally get some international action after Northern Ireland's game against Russia was called off due to a snow blizzard in Belfast.

Their home tie against Israel on Tuesday is expected to go ahead, providing the weather continues to improve, with the Russia game likely to be rearranged for June.

Blowing the whistle on football's debt problem: Liverpool, Fulham, West Ham ... - The Independent

Both Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Lloyds act as bankers to debt-ridden football clubs in the top flight. And they confirmed to The Independent that they participate in lending to others.

While neither comes close to market-leader Barclays, which as sponsor of the Premier League could be expected to be heavily involved, or HSBC, the news is still set to cause controversy with campaigners.

That is because they are effectively using state funds to help finance the Premier League at a time when all banks are facing criticism for failing to do enough to lend to Britain's legion of credit-starved small businesses.

RBS, 81 per cent owned by the taxpayer, serves as banker to both Liverpool and Fulham FC. According to the most recent editor of Deloitte's football finance report, Liverpool had net cash listed at £9.6m but £202m of other debt bringing its total "net" debt to £192m.

The club, owned by former derivatives trader John Henry's Fenway Sports Group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox baseball team, made a pre tax profit of £5m in 2011 but lost £19m prior to that.

Fulham, according to the report, had bank loans and overdrafts of £20.3m and £24.6m of other debt making a total of £46m. It made a pre-tax loss of £5.4m.

The report's figures only go up to the end of 2011 because the current edition is still in preparation, with not all clubs having yet filed their 2012 accounts.

Meanwhile Lloyds Banking Group serves as banker to West Ham through its Bank of Scotland subsidiary acquired as part of the merger with HBoS.

Deloitte's report shows the East London club had bank loans and overdrafts listed at £37.6m plus £4m of other debt making a total of £41m. It made a pre tax loss of £18.6m in the 2011 financial year. Lloyds is 40 per cent owned by the taxpayer.

During the financial crisis RBS received £45bn of direct state aid and hundreds of billions of pounds in other support, including insuring its bad debt and "liquidity" support when funding markets were effectively closed. Lloyds received £20bn in addition to the indirect assistance.

Bankers privately say that lending to football clubs represents a highly risky activity, with some teams paying player wages that come close to or even exceed turnover before any other costs such as ground maintenance and transfer fees are taken into account.

"The problem is not just the risk," said one source. "You can face a serious problem with fans if you have to call in loans."

A banker involved in football finance told The Independent: "I'd rather we didn't lend to football clubs, but the higher-ups won't let me stop."

While both banks insisted that they were not the sole financiers of any of the three clubs' debt, they admitted to financing other clubs borrowings. They declined to say how many clubs or how much, despite their status as state-backed entities supported by taxpayer funds.

Lloyds released a statement saying: "We provide a range of facilities to sports clubs, including some football clubs. In making lending decisions we treat each one as an individual business, rather than adopting a broad brush approach to the sector as a whole. We cannot discuss the details of our exposure to the sector or to individual clubs."

Sir Mervyn King, the governor of the Bank of England, last week wrote to businessman Mike Benson to express his sympathy and frustration over Mr Benson's inability to secure finance for a new transit van for his business.

Simon Chouffot, spokesperson for the Robin Hood Tax campaign, said the banks should be concentrating on putting money into the economy to help it recover.

He said: "While football fans will thank banks for keeping their clubs afloat, everyone could celebrate if banks put the same effort into supporting the rest of the economy."

Brazil 1-1 Russia: Real Madrid midfielder Kaká hopes to be called up again - Sambafoot.com

Real Madrid's midfielder Kaká returned to Brazil's starting lineup against Russia, but he failed to impress, getting subbed off in the second half.

Kaká has not played as often as he would like at club level, but his experience is deemed useful for the national team.

The midfielder has admitted he did not play well, he said after the game: "It wasn't my best game for Brazil, I made mistakes in decisive moments, in the last pass. Unfortunately things don't always happen the way we want".

Kaká is confident he will be called up again though, he said: "That was another step, I know I have to improve more, fix some things, use something of what I have done, form is what matters, it will depend on what I do for my club, Scolari has been following the games".

He did not complain about Brazil's formation, he added: "I feel comfortable, we had freedom to use the space ahead of us, and switch when defending. Unfortunately Russia didn't give us much space".

The Real Madrid player thinks Brazil will win improve, he said: "The win will come naturally, of course the current situation bothers us, as everyone wants to win.The draw against Italy left a bad taste as we were winning. It was different today".

5 Defining Moments of the 2012-13 Season For - Arsenal World

5 Defining Moments of the 2012-13 Season For Arsenal. The fate of many clubs is possibly decided on the last day of the year, as the English Premier League brings to its conclusion. As the subject could be heading back to Old Trafford, the battle for the remaining three Champions League places is gaining pace, with seven items addressing four groups. For Arsenal, a leave from the Champions League will be terrible and manager, Arsene Wenger was quick to recognize that fact. ?Qualifying for the Champions League is substantial for us. You want to be there and I don?t visualize something else.? Like past periods, Arsenal has fought with sporadic activities. Their failure to begin or end games has seen the Gunners fall several things this year. Whatever the outcome, the Gunners can look back once again to 5 defining moments of the summer season. 2. QPR (Home; 27-10-2012 ): Following a turbulent couple weeks for the Gunners, a win against QPR was precisely what a doctor ordered. What should have been an appropriate victory from the league strugglers was such a thing but simple. The goal from Arteta, which may have now been regarded offside, was enough to secure success and three points for the Gunners. Result 1-0; Points 3. 3. Fulham (Home; 10-11-2012 ): After beginning the game in emphatic manner, the Gunners identified themselves with a two goal pillow after only 23 minutes. But, they lost the initiative and with the game hanging in the balance, were given a fee. Arteta did not transform the chance (preserved well by Schwarzer) and Arsenal was dealt an enormous hit. Two points dropped which may still come back to haunt them. Result 3-3; Points 1. 4. Liverpool (Home; 30-09-2013 ): With still another sloppy begin to the overall game the Gunners found themselves with a hill to climb and claw back a two goal shortage. But, in just a period of three minutes, objectives from Giroud and Walcott received the Gunners degree. Many chances were squandered since the game ended in a stalemate. A place acquired or two dropped will only be known at the end of the season. Result 2-2; Points 1. 5. Sunderland (Away 09-02-2013 ): Playing Sunderland away is never a straightforward task, however the Gunners found themselves in the lead. Jenkinson?s clumsy tackles saw him gaining red, making Arsenal in a spot of trouble. For over 30 minutes the Gunners managed valiantly and, top notch preserves from Szczesny guaranteed all three factors for Arsenal. Result 1-0; Points 1. With seven games to go this season, the Gunners have to play each game just like a cup final and no opposition ought to be taken lightly. Finishing in a Champions League place, might help the director, look forward to just one more season competing with Europe?s elite. Failure could possibly be negative for the club. Source: DSG

Manchester United Transfers: Would Julian Draxler Be a Good Fit at Old Trafford? - Bleacher Report

One of the more recent rumours related to Manchester United is about their supposed interest in young German midfielder, Julian Draxler. This had already been carried by other media sources.

Now while there is no reason to disbelieve these stories, they can be added to rumours about Mario Gotze, Ilkay Gundogan, Lars Bender, Marco Reus and Thomas Muller.

First, by many people's estimations, United have needed at least one new midfield star ever since Roy Keane retired, let alone pending the retirement of Paul Scholes.

Poor Michael Carrick came in for no end of stick as Sir Alex went season after season without beefing up the engine room. However, even though he has now confounded his critics, that doesn't mean there isn't room for at least one class signing to play alongside him.

Some fans would have that to be a defensive, or "box-to-box" type, player like Kevin Strootman or Victor Wanyama. Others would rather see a more creative player like Gotze, Luka Modric or Joao Moutinho.

Second, the Old Trafford club is one of the richest in the world. With the pending new Sky deal, the better share price and the burgeoning commercial sponsorships, United are seen as rich enough to sign most players in the world, whether or not they have to offload first.

Finally, Sir Alex Ferguson's scouting network is as large, comprehensive and global as most in world football. When a United scout, or the great man himself, is spotted at a match, journalists will inevitably try to second-guess who he might be watching.

You can't blame reporters for putting two and two together and making five, nor can you blame players' agents for talking up their charges to get a better move or a better contract.

Nor could you blame Sir Alex for letting rumours run. United have to pay top dollar anyhow to get a player. Even if he has no interest, not denying a rumour could hike the price that one of his competitors has to pay.

At the moment they are running away with the Premier League, relying on Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Anderson and an occasional Ryan Giggs in midfield. No real problems there, then.

Irrespective of the appalling referee's decision, they have crashed out of the Champions League early yet again, having been in the final only two years ago.

While Carrick and Cleverley seem to make the preferred partnership, Anderson is so unconvincing that he may go this summer; Giggs is 40 this year and shouldn't be playing there; and there is no cover in depth for injuries.

While supporters may pine for another youth-led renaissance, Ryan Tunnicliffe doesn't look anywhere near the class of a Strootman, for example, and hugely talented Adnan Januzaj may need at least another year to bulk up and get top-level playing experience.

But the Schalke player has already racked up 91 appearances at 19, including 68 in the Bundesliga and four international caps for Germany.

This begs the question: Why on earth is it that, with the notable exception of players like Wayne Rooney, neither United nor many of the top Premier League teams seem to give the same sort of chances to young players that Bundesliga sides do?

Whether from within their own ranks or outside, however, at present it would seem that United need either expensive experienced players, or a couple of strong, rangy, skilled younger players: one holding or box-to-box and one creative.

Because United attack from the back and defend from the front, they need height in midfield to augment both attack and defence; and they need at least one player who can run through a packed defence.

This latter is an important point, because if you watch the YouTube videos of all these talented young midfielders running through and scoring goals, in most cases the defence they are up against would make Stoke City look world class.

Whereas in the Premier League and at the higher levels of the Champions League, midfield players in particular are going to come up against organised, drilled defences where the whole team harries and covers.

That is why Sir Alex puts a premium on players like Shinji Kagawa and Wilfired Zaha, who can cut through a defence and dynamically interchange with all the other attacking players.

Nobody in English football is better at developing top talent than Manchester United. They have a successful track record spanning at least 50 years.

He has to balance the imperative of trying to win everything, especially the Premier and Champions Leagues, with bringing through the stars of the future.

He won't always get it right. Some might say he got it wrong with Paul Pogba, who left to get much faster advancement elsewhere.

At the end of the day, Sir Alex has to rely on one quality as being preeminent and that is loyalty: to the club and to the team. And who can say he's got it wrong when teamwork is clearly what makes a difference this season?

He also has outstanding role models in Giggs, Scholes and even Rooney and Ferdinand who have spent nine or 10 years at the same club. Giggs and Scholes could surely have earned far more at the likes of Real Madrid or Milan.

It is clear that if you have the talent and stay with United, the rewards will eventually follow you. It's a bit like the old choice between going to university and studying a profession, as opposed to leaving school at 16 and earning money.

So the manager can recruit from outside the club or within. In practice, he mixes both. And even from outside the club, he mixes experience and youth.

That is the choice he has here, except that in the midfield, apart from the established players, he only has youth to choose from inside the club.

At the moment only Powell, Januzaj and possibly Ryan Tunnicliffe, Davide Petrucci or Freddie Veseli seem likely to make a case in the next year or two. Mats Daehli looks a great prospect on the wing, but Andreas Pereira and Ben Pearson are further down the line.

Outside, he could go for Luka Modric, for example, or Julian Draxler. Modric is of course the finished article. As his cameo in the second leg against Real Madrid showed, he could step straight in and make an immediate impact.

Gotze at Dortmund looks like the finished article at only 20, but Draxler is not far behind. If you're going for the younger end, Christian Eriksen is a fine prospect at 21. But then what about Strootman, who is barely 23?

In the end, it might just come down to the fee. Gotze might be prohibitively expensive; Modric might not be available.

Draxler, Eriksen and Strootman would probably all be in the £15 to £20 million range. When you consider what Phil Jones cost, a price in that range might satisfy Sir Alex's wish for "value" in the market.

If we assume that Scholes and possibly Darren Fletcher will retire, and Anderson is deemed surplus to requirements, then there is room for two more midfielders.

If two are brought in from outside, this could severely inhibit Powell's progress. Imagine if he went out on loan next season and watched Draxler and Strootman establish themselves in the team.

Sir Alex is very keen on the holding midfield role that Carrick occupies. Anderson has never looked convincing in that role, which is why he should go, because he doesn't do enough in attack either.

Tunnicliffe is a long way behind even Powell, let alone Draxler. He will surely need at least two or three years to take on what was Fletcher's role. Veseli's best chance is also that way and he seems to have moved past young Ryan in the last couple of months alone.

So if, as seems likely, Powell is being developed to succeed Carrick, there would be room for a talented player like Draxler. He could immediately alternate with Cleverley, such that Sir Alex could play him and Carrick as a pair or Cleverley and Powell as time goes on.

There is no doubt that Draxler is a player of some talent. United have never signed a German player straight into the first team. This lad is already a full German international, despite the depth of competition from his young compatriots.

Nevertheless, as soon as he came to Old Trafford he would go into their development programme. The coaches would work on his defensive skills and, whether in the Under 21s or the first team occasionally, he would be given experience of playing a holding role to bolster his natural range of attacking skills.

In conclusion, for years the media and fans have asked when Sir Alex is going to sign more midfielders. He has bought well in the young Powell and the outrageously talented but raw young winger, Zaha.

This summer the manager could be spoilt for choice in the market place as financial fair play begins to bite here and on the continent.

If he could get a player like Draxler or Bender for as little as £15 million he must surely see that as good business and value in the transfer market.
