VENTURES AFRICA – Africa-focused telecommunications group Etisalat has signed another 4-year sponsorship deal with leading Spanish football club FC Barcelona, for an undisclosed amount.

CEO of the Abu Dhabi-based telecom group Ahmad Julfar, signed the agreement with Sandro Rosell, FC Barcelona's persident, at Camp Nou, the club's official stadium.

The deal extends Etisalat's rights as the football club's main sponsor in 15 countries, including Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Benin, Togo, Niger, Gabon, Central African Republic and United Arab Emirates.

In Nigeria where Etisalat is a major telecom operator, its competitors Globacom and Airtel have also signed sponsorship deals with Manchester United and Arsenal FC respectively.

Rosell noted that Etisalat had 140 million customers and FC Barcelona 350 million fans around the world adding that he hoped both brands grow.

"There is space to grow. As you [etisalat] are growing, we will also grow and that is what we are expecting from this deal," Rosell added.

Business Day reports Deloitte's latest "Football Money League" rankings published in January, put FC Barcelona as the second richest club behind fellow spanish club Real Madrid, in 2011-2012.
