According to Graeme Yorke of the Daily Mail, the club sent their chief scout to watch Atletico Madrid star Radamel Falcao as he scored two goals against Granada on Sunday:
Sportsmail revealed last week that [Alex] Ferguson is considering a £47million deal - that could involve Javier Hernandez as part of a swap - to land the Colombia striker.
While manager Alex Ferguson has denied previous reports, recent evidence is starting to mount that the team is actually in pursuit of the talented striker. Particularly juicy is the rumor that Hernandez—valued at £20 million by United—will be offered in a swap along with £27 million cash, reports Yorke.
The club already boast two of the top forwards in the world between Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. The two have combined for 32 goals and 17 assists this season.
Rivals Manchester City and Chelsea have also been linked with Falcao (via Yorke), so a transfer of this magnitude could allow a top Premier League team to thwart some of their top competition.
However, winning one EPL title is not enough for a powerhouse like United. The English club had a disappointing early exit in the Champions League when they lost to Real Madrid in the Round of 16.
The Colombian star is one of the best scorers in the world and would provide yet another challenge for opponents on the defensive end. This season, he has 24 goals in La Liga, which ranks third behind only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
By adding Falcao, the club would once again have one of the best strikers in the world—someone who can help them compete on the same level as the aforementioned top European squads. Putting him next to van Persie would be almost unfair for opponents.
Adding help on the defensive side could help for the future, but this club will win a lot of matches by simply outscoring the opposition. If Manchester United wants to return to the top of the world, adding Falcao is the way to do it.
